Gillian Greene: The Woman Behind the Spider-Man Director
Gillian Greene is a film director and producer who is married to one of the most successful filmmakers in Hollywood, Sam Raimi. But she is more than just a supportive spouse. She has her own career and achievements in the entertainment industry. In this blog post, we will explore her life story, her relationship with Raimi, and her latest projects.
Early Life and Family
Gillian was born on January 6, 1968, in Santa Monica, California. She is the daughter of Lorne Greene, a legendary actor who starred in the classic TV shows Bonanza and Battlestar Galactica, and Nancy Deale, an actress and painter. She grew up in a creative environment and developed an interest in acting and filmmaking from a young age. She often visited her father on set and learned from his experience.
Gillian is the only child of her parents, but she has two half-siblings from her father’s first marriage. Her half-brother is Charles Greene, a lawyer and businessman, and her half-sister is Belinda Susan Bennett, a nurse and writer.
Education and Acting Career
Gillian attended the prestigious Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica, where she met many future celebrities, such as Kate Hudson, Maya Rudolph, and Jack Black. She graduated in 1986 and enrolled in the University of Southern California, where she studied film and theater.
She made her acting debut in 1979, when she appeared as Melanie in an episode of Battlestar Galactica, the sci-fi series that starred her father. She also had a role in the 1988 TV movie Bonanza: The Next Generation, a sequel to her father’s iconic western show. She played Jennifer Sills, the daughter of Hoss Cartwright, one of the main characters.
However, Gillian soon realized that acting was not her true passion. She wanted to be behind the camera, directing and producing her own stories. She decided to pursue a career as a filmmaker and enrolled in the American Film Institute, where she honed her skills and learned from the best.
Marriage and Children
Gillian met Sam Raimi in 1991, when she was working as an assistant to the Coen brothers, the acclaimed directors of Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No Country for Old Men. Raimi was a friend and collaborator of the Coens, and he was impressed by Gillian’s talent and personality. They started dating and fell in love.
They got married in 1993, in a private ceremony attended by their family and friends. They have been together ever since, supporting each other’s careers and raising their five children. They have three sons, Henry, Dashiell, and Lorne, and two daughters, Emma and Schooley. They live in a beautiful mansion in Los Angeles, where they have a home theater and a large collection of movies.
Directing and Producing Career
Gillian made her directorial debut in 2010, with the short film Fanboy. The film is a comedy about a young man who travels to Los Angeles to audition for his favorite director, Sam Raimi, who is casting for his next Spider-Man movie. The film is a homage to Raimi’s fans and features cameo appearances by Raimi himself and two of his and Gillian’s children, Henry and Emma.
The film was well-received and distributed through Amazon Prime Video. It also earned Gillian a nomination for the Best Short Film Award at the 2010 Method Fest Independent Film Festival.
In 2014, Gillian directed her first feature film, Murder of a Cat. The film is a mystery comedy about a man who investigates the death of his beloved cat, and uncovers a conspiracy involving his neighbors, a cop, and a pet store owner. The film stars Fran Kranz, Nikki Reed, J.K. Simmons, Blythe Danner, and Greg Kinnear.
The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014, where it received positive reviews and praise for its quirky humor and original plot. The film also reunited Gillian with Simmons and Kranz, who had starred in her short film Fanboy.
Gillian is also a producer, and has worked on several projects with her husband. She was an executive producer on the 2013 horror film Evil Dead, a remake of Raimi’s cult classic. She was also a producer on the 2015 TV series Ash vs Evil Dead, a sequel to the original film franchise. She is currently working on the upcoming film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will be directed by Raimi and will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
